Savannah Jewish Film Festival

From the battlefields of the Civil War to fields of dreams, the 2011 Savannah Jewish Film Festival promises a cinematic journey that once again showcases the richness and texture of the Jewish experience in America, Israel and throughout the world. The 2011 Festival will run from January 29th – February 6th at the Jewish Educational Alliance (JEA) and is a project of the Savannah Jewish Federation and the JEA.

The Savannah Jewish Film Festival was established in 2003. Additional support for the Festival is provided by corporate and individual sponsors; for information on sponsorships, please contact Lynn Levine or Adam Solender at (912) 355-8111.

Full Festival Passes are on sale at the Jewish Educational Alliance, 5111 Abercorn St. or online at www.savj.org

22nd Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival

The 22nd Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival kicks off its celebration on February 1, 2011, and will continue through Sunday, February 13th with some pre- and post-festival events. The festival is presented by The City of Savannah and Savannah State University, and all events and activities are free of admission* and open to the public. Each year, the festival presents activities for every age and every interest. Cultural education and exposure to the performing and visual arts, as well as ethnic cuisine, crafts, fun and family are emphasized throughout the celebration. Great music of every genre and dance performances by national recording artists and dancers, local youth talent showcases, historic tours, visual art exhibitions by internationally acclaimed and local artists and sculptors, lectures, spoken word and dramatic productions are all included on the schedule. In addition, educational opportunities are provided during the festival through a Health and Wellness Fair, Culinary Arts activities and Youth Programs. Grand Festival Day, family fun day of top entertainment, is one of the highlights of the festival and is held in the Savannah Civic Center’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Arena on a Saturday, February 12th from morning into the evening. In addition to the variety of activities and performances, food and retail vendors are also on hand with a wide variety of food, goods and services.

Georgia History Festival

This event continues Georgia Historic Society’s long-standing tradition of commemorating the state’s rich history with two weeks of lively educational programming and signature social events, including:

The Georgia Day Parade on February 11, 2011, starring thousands of elementary school students in period costume and led by General Oglethorpe himself
The two-day Colonial Faire and Muster at Wormsloe State Historic Site featuring cannon firings, period dancing and other demonstrations of early American life

Savannah Irish Festival

The 19th annual Savannah Irish Festival will take place February 18-20, 2011 at the Savannah Civic Center at Montgomery and Oglethorpe Streets in historic downtown Savannah, GA.

Join us for a fun-filled weekend with traditional music and plenty of Irish Dancing. Stroll through our romantic city and enjoy the largest Irish Festival in the South.

$5 donation taken at the door for the Friday night Ceili in the Civic Center’s upstairs ballroom.

A one day ticket for Saturday or Sunday costs $12 and a two day ticket is $16, plus service charges for both from the Civic Center Box Office.

RAIN, Broadway in Savannah, A Tribute to the Beatles

The history of RAIN actually predates the Broadway hit “Beatlemania”, from which RAIN’s all-star cast was recruited. When Dick Clark searched for the musicians to record the sound track for “Birth of the Beatles”, he didn’t have to look much further than to this talented group.

3rd Annual Mardi Gras, Tybee Island

On March 4th and 5th, 2011 Tybeefest will present the 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Tybee celebration on Tybee Island, Georgia. Tybee is a natural setting for the Mardi Gras event due to its unique character and fun-loving residents.

The event will encompass the traditions of Mardi Gras, an event with origins dating back to the ancient Romans and carried on today in cities such as Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. Mardi Gras is held on the last day before the start of Lent.

Tybee will be dressed in an array of purple, gold, & green flags depicting the Tybee Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras Tybee will include a Masquerade Ball, the Mardi Gras Tybee Parade, the Mardi Gras Tybee Street Party featuring free live entertainment & more.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Savannah is known for hosting the second largest parade in the world. However, all that have seen it say it is the grandest in the world! We begin this religious and cultural celebration approximately two weeks prior to the parade. Some of these traditional events include the Investiture of the Grand Marshal, Greening of the Fountain in Forsyth Park, Tara Feis, Celtic Cross Mass and Ceremony, and Sergeant William Jasper Green Ceremony. On the morning of the parade, Mass is held at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in historic downtown Savannah. We welcome you to attend any and all of these events and learn about our rich Irish heritage.

Savannah Music Festival

SCAD Sidewalks Arts Festival

This popular event features a chalk drawing competition on the sidewalks of Savannah’s centerpiece, beautiful Forsyth Park. Drawing competition entries will be judged and awarded prizes. The event also includes food, children’s and youth areas for young artists, as well as music throughout the day.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The chalk competition features categories for students, alumni and prospective students. Throughout the weekend, special events are offered for alumni, prospective students and families of current SCAD students

Doggie Carnival to benefit Humaine Society

K-9 International Frisbee Disc Dogs, which features rescue animals in all of their shows. The carnival will also include food vendors, raffles, doggie derby races, pet/owner look-alike contests, a pooch smooch, best dog trick contest and other events and games.

An estimated 3,000 people, many with their dogs, attended last year, and Richards said she hopes for a good turnout again this year.
