SCAD Graduation: Cool Hotel, Hot Tickets

Savannah GA Inns and Hotels card

Welcome to Savannah, Georgia!

Got a soon-to-be SCAD grad on your family tree or your Facebook page? If so, you need to get busy. Graduation ceremonies are June 2, and the Thunderbird Inn is already half way to full that weekend.

The SCAD Class of 2012 (Savannah College of Art and Design for those of you who missed acronym practice) has grown so large that it will take three ceremonies at the Savannah Civic Center to fit all the pomp and circumstance in. Read the schedule and details at http://www.scad.edu/experience/events/commencement/index.cfm.

Or you could just take our word for it. The largest, most comprehensive ceremony starts at 9 a.m., with seating opening at 8 a.m. Translation: you’re gonna want to get here Friday. And the later of the two degree presentation ceremonies doesn’t wrap up until 6 p.m. Translation: stay Saturday night, so you can celebrate in style.

You can drop a fortune on hotel rooms in Savannah – but thanks to the Thunderbird Inn, you don’t have to. A room with two double beds is $146/night, and king rooms are $159/night. Or splurge for the amenity-rich retro king rooms at $175 a night. (Plus tax, of course – but as someone smart enough to know a college graduate, you expected that.) And parking is both available and free at the Thunderbird, and we’re within walking distance of the graduation venue.

No wonder the Thunderbird Inn is already half-full for SCAD graduation weekend!

And don’t worry if not everyone in your party can score a ticket to the graduation (they’re in limited supply, you know.) All rooms at the Thunderbird come with free Wi-Fi. Hey, we may be retro but we’re also the hippest hotel in Savannah!

Downtown Savannah’s Newest McDonald’s Restaurant Sends The McBites Mobile on a Social Call to Thunderbird Inn

McBites Mobile to visit Thunderbird Inn in downtown Savannah GA

SAVANNAH Georgia (March 22, 2012) – Thunderbird Inn in downtown Savannah is one of the first downtown businesses to reach out and welcome the newest McDonald’s restaurant to the neighborhood. On Friday, March 23, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., the fun-loving McBites Mobile and team pop in for a social call under the giant neon sign at the so-hip Thunderbird Inn.

Thunderbird Inn manager, Mark Thomas and his Twitter team reached out to cheer on McDonald’s arrival in the northwest quadrant of the Landmark Savannah Historic District. “This is southern reciprocity at its very best to have The McBites Mobile pay a social call at our fun-loving inn! What a pleasure for us, our guests, and all our neighbors!” (more…)

Modern Amenities and Yesteryear Treats at the Thunderbird Inn in Downtown Savannah GA

SAVANNAH GA (March 19, 2012) — What if you could get the best of the present and the past in a hip hotel room you could actually afford?

Funny you should ask, because that’s exactly what you can get at the Thunderbird Inn, the hippest hotel in Savannah. Three special rooms – the deluxe king – have now been outfitted with perks that offer the best of modern entertainment, along with some retro treats that helped define “deluxe” back in the Swinging Sixties.

Let’s review the new (and new-old) treats:

Magic Fingers! Yes, the real Magic Fingers! Time was, they were the cutting-edge amenity for circa-1960s motels. You dropped a quarter in a bedside slot, and the bed vibrated in a relaxing massage. Call it kitschy or call it kinky, it was a cultural icon. Anyway, the Thunderbird’s new Magic Fingers are better than the old version because you don’t even need a quarter to make them work.

Vintage typewriters! Yes, texting had a grandmother, and her name was typing. To go with these venerable communication devices, the Thunderbird Inn will throw in a stamped envelope so you, too, can send snail mail.

Wii game consoles, with games available from the front desk.

Streaming Netflix®, where the thousands of movies and TV shows include both contemporary fare and vintage Sixties offerings, like the original “Star Trek” series.

• Radio alarm clocks equipped with iPod® docking stations, so you can go retro while keeping your ears firmly planted in the present.

The Thunderbird Inn also offers free Wi-Fi to all of its guests (sorry, we just couldn’t stomach the idea of re-creating the screech of the dial-up modems of the recent past.) But wait – there’s more! A tiny little mint isn’t cool enough for the Thunderbird Inn. When we turn down your bed at night, we put a MoonPie® on your pillow. Welcome to Southern hospitality!

See what we mean about the best of the present and the past?

Authentically Modern & Hip in Savannah Since 1964 — Thunderbird Inn!

The DOCOMOMO US National Tour Day events in Savannah are October 78-8, 2011.  The Thunderbird Inn in Savannah (circa 1964) is thrilled to be numbered among the modern buildings.   We are noticing lately that our fun, experiential marketing’s cool, hip vibe — jump started from our highway motel’s “Hippest hotel in Savannah” (TM) slogan — is getting mussed about (inappropriately, we add) by others.  We wonder, “Why trample on the little guy to inch into our hard-earned, groovy Savannah hotel lodging niche?”

So, today to commemorate the cool, modern DOCOMOMO tour and events and our “Hippest Hoste in Savannah” slogan, our so-cool, quirky billboard reads:

Authentically
Hip and cool
Since 1964
Do not go for
impostors

“Stay Hip!” says Mark Thomas, General Manager at the Thunderbird Inn in Savannah, GA

Savannah Weiner Dog Races: Part Savannah Fun, Part Dachshund Rescue, Part Georgia Tourism

Yes, indeed! Savannah is a pet-friendly destination (especially dachshund lovers) on this beautiful Oktoberfest morning along the Savannah riverfront in Morrell Park today!  Pet lovers flew in from Seattle, and drove in from all over the southeast — Vera Beach, Raleigh, Augusta, Hilton Head.  Our post-event  registration review will tell us all the city names!

Pet lovers came in mass to the 12th Annual Wiener Dog Races, sponsored by Savannah Morning News and benefiting Dachshund Rescue of North America.  Tourists and locals found wholesome fun and wonderfully, no-so-serious (mostly unrehearsed!) competition.

Run for a treat?  Run for an “atta boy”?  Yup, that’s what over 200 little dachshund darlings were doing; and, it was heartwarming to be a part of it!  The Thunderbird Inn in Savannah‘s beautiful downtown is the 2011 lodging sponsor for the Savannah Weiner Dog Races.
