Majoring in Hipness at Thunderbird Inn, Savannah GA

Summer’s great, but we’ll admit it – we like Savannah best when our friends from the various colleges are here! And if you are a new or returning college student and don’t know the Thunderbird Inn, well, there’s a cool surprise in your near future.

You see, you’re gonna want to show off your cool new hometown (that would be Savannah) and your cool new college (which could be SCAD, Savannah State, Armstrong Atlantic, Savannah Tech or any of the other academic institutions we have trouble keeping up with.) Invite your friends to visit so you can show off your great taste in geography and academia. It’s what weekends were invented for!

But there’s a downside of having your best friend from high school sleeping on your dorm room floor. And there’s a limit to how many people per square inch can occupy your apartment (remember all those roommates you have?) The solution? The Thunderbird Inn, the hippest hotel in Savannah!

Why steer your friends to the Thunderbird? (more…)

Thanks, Brown’s Guides, It’s Good to Be Noticed!

Savannah Inns and hotels | Thunderbird Inn retro hotel

Brown's Guides fans recently named Thunderbird Inn "Best One of Kind Hotel in Georgia"

Word is getting around: Overdone and over-priced is not the only way to do Savannah. The Thunderbird Inn is on the receiving end of some kind words from Brown’s Guide to Georgia on just that topic. That’s us on their website (check it out at http://www.brownsguides.com/v/thunderbird-inn/) and we’re also on their Facebook page.

It seems the Brown’s folks are impressed by our retro style and our budget philosophy – and who wouldn’t be? Our circa-1964 classic roadside motel is as true to its era as anything you’ll find in historic Savannah. Our rooms are clean, fresh and charming – plus they’re amenity-rich. We’ve added just enough of today to keep your yesteryear experience sharp, with things like Wi-Fi throughout the Thunderbird. Pick one of our deluxe king rooms and you’ll enjoy such features as streaming Netflix and a Wii game system. All this for a price that won’t break the budget! Plainly, it’s no accident that we’re known as Savannah’s hippest hotel.

So thanks, Brown’s Guide, for noticing what we do. Keeping the history, but dumping the stuffy part – that’s us! We’re not like everybody else. We like that about ourselves.

Catch “The Boulevard” Travel Video in Downtown Savannah Georgia

The Thunderbird Inn recruited more than a dozen of its closest business friends to help film “The Boulevard,” now playing below and on a YouTube screen near you.

The name comes from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just a block or so away from our retro hotel. We planned the video to showcase the area within a couple of blocks of the boulevard – from Barnard to Boundary streets — a treasure trove of attractions new and old that often fly below visitors’ radar.  Ships of the Sea Museum, SCAD Museum of Art, and the Georgia State Railroad Museum are some of the better known destinations in our new video, but we can introduce both tourists and locals to undiscovered gems.

For example, you can drop the better part of 20 bucks to lunch on famous soul food Southern cooking in downtown Savannah – and we’d be among the first to admit it’s worth every penny. But the Boulevard hosts an authentic soul food restaurant where you can fill up for a mere $5 on an equally memorable meal, seven days a week.

So check out our video. It’s a fast-paced preview of what’s in striking distance of the hippest hotel in Savannah! The collaborative video project was developed by Thunderbird Inn’s general manager, Mark Thomas, local marketing consultant Sandy Traub, and Guy Smith’s Popcorn Octane LLC digital production firm based in Hilton Head Island, SC.

Spring has Sprung – Savannah Style

Thunderbird Inn's garden historic Savannah GA USA

Refreshed Spring Garden at Thunderbird Inn, Savannah GA USA

Written by “Landscapes by Rick”

There’s no place on Earth quite like beautiful downtown Savannah, also known as the ‘First City in Georgia’. From the stately historic homes and businesses to the 22 beautiful squares, signs of spring are everywhere. Mother Nature has been very kind to us this year. Temps have been in the 80’s this week. What beautiful weather for ‘playing in the dirt’. Yes, I refer to my job as ‘playing’ because landscaping is my passion. When I’m planting, all the problems and cares in life just seem to take a back burner. I like to think of it as therapy.

One of my favorite places to ‘play’ is the historic Thunderbird Inn located on West Oglethorpe Avenue, just a short walk away from the heart of downtown Savannah. The moment you arrive, the atmosphere makes you feel like you’re right at home. Hats off to Mark Thomas, General Manager, and all his staff for their hard work! (more…)
